Dr. M. Divakar Reddy
Senior General PhysicianDengue is a mosquito-borne viral infection that causes a severe flu-like illness. In rare cases, it can develop into a potentially lethal complication called severe dengue (Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever). Because the early symptoms can easily be mistaken for a standard viral fever, early diagnosis is crucial.
Understanding the Early Symptoms
Symptoms usually begin four to ten days after being bitten by an infected mosquito. The most common early indicator is a sudden, high fever (often reaching 104°F/40°C), accompanied by at least two of the following:
- Severe headaches, often described as throbbing or pounding.
- Pain behind the eyes (retro-orbital pain).
- Muscle and joint pain, earning dengue the nickname "breakbone fever."
- Nausea and vomiting.
- Swollen glands and widespread skin rash.
At-Home Care Is Not Enough When Warning Signs Appear
While adequate hydration, rest, and paracetamol are recommended during the initial phase, avoiding NSAIDs like ibuprofen or aspirin is vital as they can increase the risk of bleeding complications.
When to See a Doctor IMMEDIATELY
The critical phase of dengue usually begins approximately 3-7 days after the onset of illness, typically around the time the fever begins to drop. If you or a loved one exhibit any of the following warning signs, rush to the hospital's Emergency Department instantly:
- Severe abdominal pain or tenderness.
- Persistent vomiting (at least 3 times in 24 hours).
- Bleeding from the gums or nose.
- Blood in vomit or stool.
- Breathing difficulties, extreme fatigue, or restlessness.
